New Instructional DVD Pre-Order

Ceramic Arts Daily  just announced the upcoming release of the Hybrid Pottery: Throwing, Altering, Assembling. It was a great experience spending a few days in Columbus, OH last spring and shooting this video with the CAD editorial staff their video guru, Kevin Davison.

I demonstrated a pitcher, a box, a teapot, an oil bottle, and a serving dish for the camera. I also show mixing, decanting, and applying terra sigillata as well as underglaze and glaze.

A clip of throwing and assembling a diamond shaped trivet for an oil bottle can be viewed here. I hope you enjoy watching.

The DVD can be pre-ordered now for shipment later in March.

A New Article and the MFA Begins

FC_JF13_PMI-1This was a nice holiday gift for me. I submitted an article to Pottery Making Illustrated in September and recently heard that it would be included in the January/February issue. What I didn’t know until I received some copies of the magazine last week was that the pitcher that I demonstrate in the article is on the cover. Thanks to the editors at PMI and thanks to Charlie Cummings taking such a nice photo of the piece.

In other news, I just finished my first semester of graduate school at the University of Florida. It has been a luxury to have the freedom to research and experiment with new ways to strengthen my work. I found inspiration in the buildings of Frank Gehry and I’ve been looking at color interaction in relation to musical harmonies.

These teapots and mugs are the culmination of the fall semester. The photos are courtesy of Linda Arbuckle.

3 Guys and Some Pottery

I’m looking forward to being back on Mockernut Road between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro, NC. I’ll be there for a long weekend, the first in August, to join my friends Doug Dotson and Ronan Peterson for this festive sale in Doug’s Studio.

I shared this studio with Doug in 2001 and 2002 and we took the first steps in figuring out how to fire his newly built soda kiln. It was a great place to work amidst the tall trees and boulders of granite.
